Hinsdale Central Varsity Football runs onto the field before their game against Downers Grove North on Sept. 11.

On Friday, Sept. 11, Hinsdale Central hosted its first division game of the season against Downers Grove North. The winner of this rivalry match-up annually takes home the infamous “Old Oaken Bucket”, which Hinsdale Central won for the ninth year in a row.

It was an especially exciting night for the seniors, as each one was recognized before the game in honor of the annual “senior night.”

The final score of the game was 43-0, with the Red Devils scoring 35 of those points in the first half. The offense was led heavily by quarterback Michael Sessa and receiver Brad Huth, who completed 11 passes and 127 yards receiving in the first half, including a 23-yard pass for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Other significant players offensively in the first half were running backs Christian Bobak (senior) and Garrett Oakey (sophomore). Bobak scored two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, and Oakey scored one touchdown during the second.

The Devils scored on five of six possessions in the first half, allowing them to control the ball and clock the majority of the time. On defense, Hinsdale didn’t allow the Downers Grove North Trojans any points the entirety of the game.

Following halftime, junior backup quarterback Josh Bean was put in and completed a 40-yard pass to make the score 41-0. Huth then completed a two-point conversion, putting Hinsdale up 43-0. This marked the beginning of the running clock which concluded the game, leaving the Trojans scoreless.

This victory marks Central’s third win in a row, making them undefeated thus far into the season. This was the Trojans’ first loss, putting them 2-1. Hinsdale Central, Lyons Township, and Glenbard West all have a record of 3-0 at the end of the third week.

Hinsdale Central will play York High School on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Elmhurst.
