Boys’ gymnastics wins first meet

On March 3, Central hosted a Boys’ Gymnastics meet, where Central and LT tied for first place.

The Red Devil Invite marks the beginning of the season for the team, that is hoping to stay competitive all the way through the State meet in May.

Contributing to the team win, Ryan Leahy, senior, took first in all-around, vault, and high bar. Alex Roca, junior, took first in rings and fourth in all-around. Nolan Holmes, junior, took first in floor.

“It was a good start for me and my team,” Leahy said. “I’m proud of how my team rallied together and put up one of the best scores in state so far.”

Training early is key for these athletes to stay in shape and develop their skills now that competitions have begun.

“The amount of work I was able to put in the first three weeks of the season I think is much better than last year, and that’s what I’m most proud of,” said Thomas Monson, sophomore.

Although they had a strong showing, the gymnasts realize there is always room for improvement. This includes learning new skills as well as perfecting existing ones.

“I think form is [our] biggest issue [right now],” Monson said. “I saw a lot of tricks [on Friday], but some of them didn’t have the form, like bent legs or toes not pointed. That’s the biggest thing we could improve on.”

With practices every day after school, the team is aiming high for successful runs in both the regular and post-season.

“I think a goal we all share is to qualify for State as a team, and hopefully earn a State title for the school this year,” Roca said.

The next meet is at LT on March 10 at 6 p.m.
