Mock Trial readies for new season

Mock Trial has been one of Hinsdale Central’s most successful teams in recent years. Ever since their 4th place finish at Nationals in 2009 and 2nd place finish in 2010, the team has had a reputation for excellence amongst Hinsdale Central’s nonathletic competitive teams.

Throughout October the team has been gearing up for their 2011-2012 season by holding tryouts, which took on one new full member and three alternates, rounding out the team of thirteen students. Chris Freiler, coach, looked for “poise, confidence, analytical abilities and a presence” in new members.

Adam Smith, junior, was accepted onto the team this year as a full member. “This is my first year on the team, so I have no doubt that I have some catching up to do in order to be on par with my teammates, but I also have no doubt that each of us has our own talents to augment the team as a whole,” Smith said.

The team plans to compete in three tournaments this year, the first of which will be taking place in January. “We plan to develop a sophisticated case on both sides by then,” Freiler said.

During the actual competitions, each team member has a specialized part to perform.  ”The decision of who performs what part is based on a combination of personal preference and our own individual strengths,” Smith said.

The team hopes reach the National Championship in Arizona this year, and though new to the team, Smith has high hopes as well. “Everyone on the team is an extremely talented individual and we have an excellent coach, so I have no doubt that we’ll do well.”
